I THANK Mr Whitelegg for pointing out my error on the precise number of councillors. He is correct when he mentions the reduction from the former 77 councillors.

However he fails to mention the Dorset Police Authority or the Dorset Fire Authority whose members and decisions we still pay for. Both of these functions were originally part of the county council’s remit.

The members of these two authorities remain unelected and I suspect if we include them in the calculation, the aggregate total will be more than 77.

At the very least, if we do not reduce their number, then perhaps the councillors will generously forgo allowances in a manner commensurate with their reduced responsibilities as their planned cuts are realised?

Or will it only be staff who suffer? Can I suggest that all those involved with the library service accept a 20/34th reduction as an example and demonstration of their desire to serve the community they represent.
