POOLE Soroptimists are delighted that the Home Secretary, Theresa May, has given recognition to Bournemouth’s need for a properly funded rape support centre.

Poole Soroptimists have persistently raised awareness about the lack of facilities for rape victims in Dorset whether due to domestic violence, unprovoked attacks, or as victims of sexual exploitation in human trafficking. Our research and work with the local refuges sadly confirms the need for these safe havens.

The numbers of young women studying at the numerous educational establishments in the area unfortunately increases the risk of sexual assaults resulting in a higher number of rape victims.

At least now victims are assured of appropriate care and understanding from expert professionals should they become victims of rape. The working partnerships between the Rape Crisis Line workers, Dorset Police, NHS and Local Authorities deserve praise and will guarantee delivery of the service as already planned for the new Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).
