I AM surprised that anyone could have ever imagined that Waitrose would bring more business to other traders in the town, although I seem to recall that Caroline Nash herself was in favour of the supermarket originally; Shops’ fury at wait for bridge (Echo, February 11).
Supermarkets do not move into towns and cities to increase business for others but for themselves at other traders’ expense.
Bridge or no bridge I do not believe the situation will improve and am certain that when the town square is pedestrianised, with on-street parking being banned, the position will only get worse.
