THERE is a lot of rejoicing by Poole Council regarding the Twin Sails Bridge Project.

It is not seen that way by many as the right bridge – the council should have stuck for a variable depth concrete bridge over to Holes Bay Road with no lifts.

Most heavy transport wanted and needed to come out at Holes Bay Road – to come out at West Quay Road is nothing more than a fourth rate solution.

I think most will remember over the years we were told that the old bridge foundations were in a dire state and it was closed for many weeks over the years for repairs.

No matter what the council says now, the reality is that when the old bridge is open for traffic, because of weight restrictions, heavy goods lorries will have to queue at the Twin Sails when it is open for boats.

I would have been more impressed if much of the power station site had been retained for industrial use.

As for the exhibition by Inland Homes Ltd, who own the Pilkington site, at St Michael’s Church Hall, the consultation was far to early and vague (remember what happened to Poole Pottery?).

Yes, of course, we need a lot more local authority housing but only for true local people.

Unfortunately most other units will be luxury homes with sea views and no doubt many will be second homes for the rich. This in turn will pull in thousands of people from around the country and yet again the indigenous people of this area will pay the price.

If anyone thinks the new bridge is going to bring peace to Blandford Road, think again.
