S CHILCOTT has raised interesting issues in his letter (No to bike route through Boscombe, Letters Jan 1). The question that needs to be asked is of what use are cycle ways on main roads?
The one we have along the Dorchester road in Upton is like most in Dorset. They are blocked by vehicles parking on them legally and that in turn forces cyclists onto footpaths. Under these conditions cycle ways no use at all, the money wasted on signage and road marking could have been used to repair pot holes and resurfacing roads and footpaths.
Cyclists and motorists need to get along with each other in accordance with the highway code by being a little more patient and tolerant towards each other.
In an ideal world without single issue pressure groups taking centre stage, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are kept apart in their own lanes such as the example in Germany.
