The suggested visit to Australia by Prince and Princess William in 2011 will be warmly welcomed by most Australians, whether monarchist or not.

Aside from giving us a chance to get to know our future King and Queen, the Royal visit will do even more than the Oprah tour to put Australia firmly on the map of prime tourist destinations with the potential to generate millions in revenue.

Undoubtedly republicans will protest at the visit of the newly married couple, just as they did at Prince William's visit earlier this year and just as British anarchists are threatening to do at the wedding itself.

If Australian republicans were genuinely serious, they would tell us what sort of republican model they propose to foist on us, instead of attacking all and everything to do with our constitution and our monarchy whilst feigning ignorance of their true motives.
