I read with interest the letter from Mr Cann (Have Your Say, November 26) who made very good points, but as takeaways are open on and off through the day and many are open all day, Cllr Charon has got an uphill battle on his hands with the litter issue. The main problem is that after years and thousands of pounds spent on advertising and fine enforcement you are dealing with a minority of people who will not or cannot be educated in this matter – who in fact see nothing wrong with litter on the streets. I can guarantee I can go out of my front door on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday morning and I know where the empty cans, bottles and takeaway boxes will be – the same place they have been for years. It’s the same people who stand at their front door almost defiantly having a cigarette. Why don’t they smoke in their back garden huddled over an ashtray where they can have their fix and warm their hands at the same time instead of flicking the cigarette stubs everywhere? Zero tolerance will not affect these people unfortunately. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
