I am outraged at Roger Oates’ assumption that anyone against speed cameras also parks on pavements, flashes lights to overtake, parks badly at hospitals and supermarkets, jumps red lights and gives verbal and visual abuse to other motorists (Have Your Say, August 30).

I do none of these things and am neither loudmouthed nor selfish. How anyone can heap such a torrent of abuse and vitriol on people they have never even met beggars belief.

I am against speed cameras but absolutely passionate about road safety and find it heartbreaking that thousands of motorists are killed or injured every year because the authorities would rather constantly tinker with speed limits than address the real issues.

Maybe Mr Oates could explain why 83 per cent of accidents involving death or serious injury are caused by vehicles which are travelling within the speed limit?
