It is a sad reality that the World Cup leads to an increase in domestic abuse Domestic Violence (Daily Echo, May 25).
But faced with facts like the 30 per cent increase in reports of domestic abuse that followed England’s loss to Portugal in 2006 it is very welcome that the local police are trying to do something about it in Dorset.
As family lawyer in Bournemouth and representative of Dorset family law group Resolution, I know how life-shattering domestic abuse can be for the families behind these figures.
The best way to end domestic abuse is to prevent it from happening in the first place – and encouraging people to stop and think about their behaviour, raising awareness of the effects of excessive drinking and giving victims information about how to get help are all important steps.
