As election candidates continue to ratchet up their pledges to UK voters, I’d like to remind them of the global responsibilities we all share to create a more fair and just world.

Just a few months ago hundreds of people from Bournemouth and Poole joined The Wave at the national march for climate justice in London.

In 2005 thousands of us travelled to Edinburgh to join a quarter of a million people to demand politicians make poverty history. People in Bournemouth and Poole and the South West gave £111,000 of their hard earned money to CAFOD alone for our Haiti emergency appeal.

We clearly care passionately about these global issues, which is why it’s vital that whoever represents us in Parliament is committed to taking action against world poverty and inequality.

CAFOD Plymouth, which covers Cornwall, the South West, Dorset and Bournemouth, urges our candidates to recognise the issues that matter to local people and pledge to tackle climate change, maintain life-saving aid and harness the power of business to benefit people and the environment.
