In response to the letter sent by Mr Root (Have Your Say, April 29), I would just like to say that animals in the UK are very lucky in comparison to animals from other countries.

At least we do have the RSPCA and other animal welfare charities which are willing to help them.

How often do we see strays on our streets?

How often do we see dogs dying at the side of the road, starving and diseased? We don’t.

In Greece, for instance, these things are commonplace and no one is bothered.

Dogs are poisoned and left to die in agony.

That would be a criminal offence in this country.

Coming to the UK is probably the only chance they would ever have of getting a home.

Would I help them? Of course I would.

We help people from other countries – either by sending money or by letting them live here, so why not animals?
