We were sorry to read the letter (Have Your Say, November 11) by the grandparents of Aneurin Barker Snook who graduated from Bournemouth University on Friday, November 6.

The letter described how proud they were to see their profoundly deaf grandson graduate but disappointed that his own enjoyment of the ceremony may have been diminished because the university had not provided “the means to enjoy what should have been a highlight of his academic experience.”

We wish to offer our apologies to the family and to reassure them that Bournemouth is a diverse and inclusive university. We go to great lengths to provide extended facilities for graduates during our award ceremonies. In fact, earlier last week, we provided signers at ceremonies to support those with hearing impairment. Sadly this wasn’t the case at the ceremony they attended. We will write to Aneurin, not least to learn from his experience, firsthand.
