I am neither a Conservative nor a particular fan of politicians, but as a researcher of feminism and pornography I am interested in the public reaction to Cllr MacLoughlin’s recent embarrassment (Council chief in porn shock, Daily Echo, October 21).
Had Cllr MacLoughlin been using the council laptop to look at Facebook I dare say that outrage wouldn’t have been the public reaction.
In fact I am willing to bet that there wouldn’t have been a public reaction at all.
It is only because the material was sexual that calls for his resignation have been made.
None of this material was against the law, and it wasn’t even looked at in the office.
Of course, ideally, he wouldn’t have been using the laptop for anything other than fighting the public cause, but I for one would rather have a representative who was a human being – with all the emotions and urges of a human being – than an empathy-free robot.
I say that calls for resignation are ridiculous, that he has suffered enough embarrassment, and that we should give the man a break for being an average, Western human being.
