Why does the media persist in using the term “honour killings” when reporting the deaths of young women murdered by their families because they choose to fall in love with a partner from another sect, religion or caste?
There is nothing honourable about such vile acts or those (almost always the parents, siblings or close relatives) who perpetrate them.
Religious beliefs that foster the notion of ‘honour’ killings and those who carry them out are barbaric throwbacks to ages long gone that have no place in a modern, civilised society.
Mothers, fathers, brothers and uncles who murder their daughters, sisters or nieces out of a so-called sense of honour are evil beyond description – totally devoid of humanity and compassion.
