The nation is officially unhappy according to an ICM poll. Only one person in 10 is feeling as happy as or happier than they did before the recession started.

But thankfully the same poll reveals what could make us happier in the midst of recession.

The good news is happiness is free.

When people help neighbours with a problem, have a cup of tea with a friend or help others with some gardening they feel much happier. These voluntary activities can be good for stress management, too – up to two thirds say volunteering helps people feel less stressed.

Small acts of kindness that have the feel good factor such as a spot of guerrilla gardening, sharing skills with an elderly person or building a hedgehog a home, can increase our serotonin levels which help us feel happier.

We know happiness is a state of mind and is not linked to financial success or status, so let’s take control and do what makes us feel good – for our own benefit and that of our communities.

This year’s CSV Make a Difference Day, Saturday October 31, is your chance to volunteer and get a happier life.
