NEARLY 40 volunteers donned wellies and bags etc, to clean up at Mudeford recently – wonderful and they should be congratulated.
Sadly the call goes out almost weekly for volunteers to do this sort of work. Yes, sometimes it can be very enjoyable, chatting as well as doing a worthwhile job. Yes, I’ve done it in the past.
In a letter in Have Your Say the other day, a correspondent complained, and rightly so, about the amount of rubbish along Baiter shore and asked what could be done about it.
Easy – the unemployment figures are fast approaching 2.5 million.
As these people are being paid benefits by the taxpayer, why not give them a bag and, under the supervision of the wonderful volunteers, earn their keep?
It’s not only beaches that are in dire need of a clean up, but our streets are in need as well.
