I was surprised to learn (at its recent Annual General Meeting) that Dorset Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust intends to change its name to Dorset Healthcare University Foundation NHS Trust.
This overly lengthy, unwieldy new title is bound to be very confusing for the general public and is also something of an insult to their service users – many of whom have severe learning disabilities, brain injury and mental illness and therefore will never have had the privilege of attending university.
The trust changed its name two years ago when it became a foundation trust and that cost the tax payer thousands of pounds.
Now it is set to spend even more public money on new signs, letter heads etc. What a pointless waste of our money.
The new name will not reflect the actual work of the trust, which is first and foremost a caregiving organisation, not a learning institution.
