After first checking my Daily Echo was not dated April 1, I was appalled to read that the unmanned Heath fire spotter plane has been grounded indefinitely (Daily Echo, April 23).
One man and his dog walking the local heathland must cause more environmental damage to the fauna and flora than this “big boy’s toy” taking to the air.
There are many quiet side roads and footpaths adjacent to our heaths that would accommodate such aircraft. Once airborne the controller could then move around the heath at will.
However, if the real problem is the controller in his vehicle, again the risk of minor damage is far less than the fires would ever cause.
