IT becomes more and more extraordinary every month the leader of Bournemouth council condemning the proposed wind farm with claims of over “£6 billion” losses to the tourism industry.

This is nothing but wild speculation. There is no evidence, no precedence, from anywhere around UK or Europe coasts that any offshore wind farm has had any negative impact on any coastal town whatsoever. And what I find astounding in all these attacks is that in over three whole years civic leaders along with MPs have never once thought it a good idea to actually visit an offshore wind farm – like those off Thanet (at 7 miles – not 13 miles) – and see for themselves.

The fact is this farm will be far from our coastal beaches. Turbines at 13 miles will be vanishingly small and faint on the horizon. And on all other issues there has been huge research filling whole volumes, down to fine details mapping movement of sea mammals.

And in all this the largest issue of all – the huge and pressing imperative for the world to recognise fossil fuel burning climate warming and instability is happening. We are running out of time to think we can get outcomes which will not need some effort and sacrifice from us all.

There are now 30 wind farms around the UK coast. 1,500 turbines. Britain is leading the world with great prospects. We should all be hugely proud and glad that we have a graspable future of clean sustainable low carbon energy - on our doorsteps.
