REFERENCE letter September 12th “Wind Farms Do Good”. I would point out that, for the few permanent jobs created, wind farms will cause a net loss of jobs to Bournemouth because of the more than £5 million taken out of the local economy by the £100 plus subsidy per year that each electricity bill payer has to contribute for renewable power. It is fundamentally dishonest to say that half a million households in Dorset will be supplied with electricity by the scheme, when it is also pointed out that this supply is intermittent.
An intermittent supply of electricity from a large number of small generating sets makes for astronomically expensive power supply.
When the wind does not blow, 100 per cent back-up must be provided by coal-fired power stations in the North. These will then also have to operate intermittently.
As with a car caught in stop-go traffic, this wastes an enormous amount of fuel. What a farce it is that the Wytch farm oilfield hardware is carefully hidden from view near Poole, while even the mist-shrouded future view of the wind turbines produced by the subsidy-seekers clearly shows a major eyesore.
