THE reason that there is now a charge for wheelchair users using the Cliff Lifts (David Bright’s letter of 9th April) is that under the Equality Act 2010 it is no longer possible to discriminate against disabled people who are non-wheelchair users, ie all disabled people, whatever their disability, must be treated the same.

This applies also to use of the land trains and to the pier toll. One carer per disabled person is still entitled to go free. If Mr Bright and his friend regularly use the lifts then he may find it more economical to purchase a season ticket costing £15. These were introduced last year and have proved very popular. Also a Freestyle Card is available for those over 60 or on a low income which permits them to use selected leisure services at reduced rates.

Information leaflets on this are available at council offices, cliff lifts and libraries.
