I NOTE with interest the recent letter from P Bingham concerning council tax etc.
Several years ago there was a cashiers’ office in the town hall, whereby all monies due could be paid directly to the council.
No need for bank giro slips and charges etc, nor any problem with the Data Protection Act. One merely walked in, gave details of the account to be credited and it was done with both parties happy and secure, that the transaction did not astray. Also one could pay in any amount, a boon to those on variable incomes in hard times.
Why not re-instate it, the cost of a single clerk is small and the convenience inestimable.
