IT WOULD seem to me that our alphabet is being overworked. It surely struggles to cater for all the support groups, protest groups, charities and consultant groups that seem to breed like rabbits.

I have given up trying to find out what CAPRO represents.

It rambles about without fail within the pages of our local community magazine.

Groups of letters standing on their own are often difficult for the general public to interpret.

If something is to be built, then a protest group must be formed.

What the devil shall we call our brave supporters?

If something is to be torn down – RTT – sorry, rally the troops!

Even if nothing is achieved, groups will certainly need four or five capital letters to grab the headlines for their particular campaign or promotion.

In the business world consultants need letters to emphasise their thriving activities.

Another pile of ABCs will pick up the pieces should a business fail.

Then of course, a little while later, the same letters in a different order will signify that they have out run their creditors and are ready to attract a few more customers.

In my old age I feel that too much time and money is lost on protests and appeals, that are spurred on by headline catching abbreviations.

There is no easy answer, as the freedom to protest is sacrosanct.

The legal involvement is where the cost and delay come in to enrich the unfathomable world of our justice system.
