I READ your report (January 15) of the fatal accident of the pensioner crossing the busy Christchurch Road in the vicinity of the Tesco Express store.

I felt a tragic irony.

In August 2012 I wrote an objection to the Director of Planning & Transport Services at Bournemouth Town Hall Annex about the then-proposed toucan crossing at the junction of Southbourne Road and Christchurch Road.

I objected to the location of the crossing.

It not only restricts the local business parking but is planned at what we regard as an accident black spot.

The text below is from the letter: “The proposed toucan crossing has been planned in an accident black spot.

“Over the years there have been many accidents on the junction and the crossing will only add to the risk.

I agree that a crossing is needed and would be better planned between St James’s School and the Tesco Express store.

On a daily basis pedestrians risk their lives to dodge the traffic whilst crossing to get to Tesco Express.

This would serve the school, Tesco Express, the bus stops and pedestrians in general.”

I did not get a reply to my letter and the toucan crossing is now under construction
