IN REPLY to John Thacker’s letter regarding fireworks (Monday Jan 7, ‘Fireworks are fun all the year round’), where has he been?

[Writing about people complaining about fireworks being let off outside of Bonfire Night, Mr Thacker stated: “Don’t they ever consider that people have other times to celebrate such as birthdays, Parties, New Year etc. They worry about dogs and all sorts of animals being frightened by the noise which in their eyes happens far too often (probably once or twice a year).”] Once or twice a year (birthdays and parties)?

Was he not here in years past when we have had fireworks every week in the summer?

(Mr Thacker also suggested people who complain “take a holiday in Spain to find out about fireworks and noise”.) Perhaps he should go to live there permanently, because obviously he doesn’t agree with our British tradition.

I’m a pensioner myself and have enjoyed holidays in Spain, especially the Ferrera and Fiestas, but that is their tradition. Don’t try to impose them on us.

We are losing our identity in this world as it is, we can do with more support in our upkeep or traditions, especially from someone whose mum and dad worked so hard for it.

By the way, when I was a child we had a dog, Prince, and he was never in a kennel; he had the run of the house... but he was so scared every November 5.

Maybe your dog is so intelligent you can tell him “Fireworks tonight”, or do you put cotton wool in his ears?
