Cherries were last night believed to have failed in a late swoop for Anton Robinson – but the deal could yet be revived during the loan window.

The Daily Echo understands Cherries launched a bid to bring the Huddersfield Town star back to Dorset ahead of yesterday’s 11pm cut-off.

However, despite sources claiming talks had taken place after the two clubs had agreed terms, Cherries looked to have missed the transfer deadline at the time the Echo went to print.

Robinson has long been linked with a Cherries return and could still be drafted in on a temporary basis once the loan window opens in seven days.

The Goldsands Stadium outfit are also believed to have enquired unsuccessfully about re-signing Bristol City striker Brett Pitman .

Meanwhile, Cherries did announce the capture of goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel around 90 minutes before the deadline.

The 23-year-old is likely to feature in the club’s development squad after penning a six-month deal. Buchel’s arrival is subject to international clearance, as well as Football League and FA approval.

Boss Paul Groves revealed that Cherries had received enquiries from rival clubs about loaning “one or two” members of his squad, but he last night reported they had not been followed up.

Daily Echo sources suggest Southend United were interested in Steven Gregory, while Donal McDermott had been linked with Chesterfield.

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans admitted his club had given up hope of signing Matt Tubbs after failing with loan and permanent offers for the Cherries striker.

Meanwhile, Groves confirmed that Richard Hughes’s return to Cherries had been finalised.
