MATT Ford is backing Ludvig Lindgren to continue his Pirates progress as he bids to build on his reputation as Poole’s surprise “match winner”.

Lindgren will be aiming to again haunt his former club when he lines up for Pirates in tonight’s Knockout Cup first leg clash at Wolverhampton.

Ford believes the emerging talent is ready to play his part following crucial away performances in recent wins at Wolves and Lakeside.

Lindgren, brother of Grand Prix star and Wolves number one Freddie, claimed two race wins in an eight-point haul in Pirates’ win at Monmore Green on April 30. He then secured two late points to help the reigning champions record an outstanding victory at Arena Essex Raceway.

Ford is confident the 21-year-old can display his credentials after getting the nod over doubling-up mate Sam Masters to help the cup holders this evening (7.30pm).

The Pirates chief told the Daily Echo: “He certainly upped his game at Wolverhampton last time and performed very well.

“Funnily enough, while most people would consider the two points he got at Lakeside to be a low score, the two points he got towards the end of the meeting were absolutely crucial.

“In a strange way, I actually believe he has been our match winner on those two occasions.

“Wolves chose not to use Ludvig this year and, sometimes, things like this can come back to haunt you.”

Ford believes Lindgren should be given time to flourish and says people should not expect him to rise as rapidly as his older brother.

He added: “Ludvig is showing a determination and maturity in his riding. He seems to be riding better for Newcastle as well and, hopefully, this is the start of an upward spiral for him.

“I think he has got ample time – he is still only 21.

“Clearly, Ludvig has something to offer. Whether he will make the top grade in speedway remains to be seen. But he has the right attributes.”

Pirates travel to Wolverhampton having already beaten Wolves in Elite Shield and league action this season.

Kyle Howarth has been selected ahead of doubling-up mate Todd Kurtz at reserve.

Wolves: F Lindgren, Aspgren, Miskowiak, Rider Replacement for Woffinden, Proctor, Wells, Sowka.

Poole: Holder, Kling, Ward, Andersson, Miedzinski, L Lindgren, Howarth.
