GARY Jones broke Cherries’ hearts with a last-gasp penalty as Lee Bradbury’s men tasted defeat at Spotland.

Jones slotted home a stoppage time spot kick after Cherries had lost Stephen Purches to a broken leg early in the first half.

Bradbury was forced into one change from the side that tasted defeat to Leyton Orient in midweek, with defender Steve Cook ruled out with an ankle injury.

Purches stepped in at right-back, with Simon Francis moving across into central defence.

Nicky Adams registered the first meaningful chance when he drove straight at Darryl Flahavan after six minutes.

But Purches was stretchered off moments later following a tough challenge from Jason Kennedy, the clash delayed for more than five minutes while medics dealt with an apparent double break of the star’s right leg.

Peter Kurucz was equal to Donal McDermott’s left-foot effort on 23 minutes, before Brian Barry-Murphy’s excellent free kick flew narrowly wide of Flahavan’s post.

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro failed to test Flahavan from distance on the half-hour, but the Cherries keeper got down well to pouch Jones’s fierce shot from the edge of the box as the hosts maintained control.

Flahavan then expertly tipped over a second effort from Jones moments later, before diving full length to his right to keep out Kevin Long’s header from the resultant corner.

As the first half drew to a close, Wes Thomas could only head Marc Pugh’s inviting corner over the bar.

Matt Tubbs should have handed Cherries the lead 16 minutes into the second half, but poked the ball wide of Kurucz’s post after neat work on the right flank between Francis and Thomas.

Flahavan then saved well from Nicky Adams as a dour second period suddenly burst into life.

Ashley Grimes failed to connect to Adams’s teasing cross five minutes later when well placed inside the Cherries six-yard box, while Charlie Daniels headed well over from Marc Pugh’s cross at the other end after 75 minutes.

Stephane Zubar was on hand to clear the danger as Jones shaped to shoot inside the six-yard box seven minutes from time and although Flahavan was able to save from Grimes late on, Harry Arter bundled over substitute Joe Thompson in stoppage time and Jones despatched the penalty.
