They did battle with the weekend weather and won – but when it came to qualifying for the Olympic trials, they were a snowdrift short of their targets.

Poole’s Fiona Hardie, Maddy Kemp and Jasmine Holmes will not be joining club-mates Dan Speers and Naomi and Noah Vides at the London Aquatics Centre next month.

Hardie, 18, came the closest, twice recording a long-course 27.06sec in the 50m freestyle at the Derventio Swim Festival in Sheffield, missing her London target by just 0.18 of a second each time.

She won a bronze medal in the final of that event and silver behind Welsh international Fern Davies in the 17/o 200m individual medley in 2:26.44 (heat 2:24.22). She also clocked 1:17.09 to come ninth in the heats of the 100m breaststroke and, at the same time, added European and Commonwealth champion and world silver medallist Hannah Miley to an impressive list of international medal-winners she has recently swum against.

Kemp, 13, was short of her best form as she came fourth in the 14-15yrs 100m butterfly in 1:07.47.

She was also 13th in the 50m freestyle in 29.23.

Holmes was the top 12-year-old by almost a second in the 100m freestyle in 1:03.71 and was third in the 12yrs 200m freestyle (2:16.95) – but both times were short of national qualification standards.
