SWIM Bournemouth breaststroker Noah Vides twice struck gold when he made a spectacular international debut for England Schools in the annual WISE international in Dublin.

The 14-year-old stormed to a comfortable victory in the junior boys’ 100m breaststroke – then returned to the pool to set up a second won in the junior 4x100m medley relay.

The Bournemouth School pupil’s winning time of 1:10.92 in the individual event carved over a second off his previous best long-course time, set at Crystal Palace in January.

It put him almost three seconds ahead of his two nearest challengers, Scotland’s Morgan Anderson (1:13.78) and Dale McAnish (1:13.88).

Ireland’s two swimmers were six and eight seconds behind Vides while England’s other swimmer Rio Kurihara was disqualified.

Wales, who normally take part, did not send a team this year.

In the medley relay, Vides was a second down on the leaders when he took over from England’s backstroker Oliver Jermy.

But he soon took the lead and by the time he handed over to Kurihara for the butterfly leg England were two seconds ahead.

Freestyle anchor man Louis Seller stopped the clock on 4:16.06, 1.3sec ahead of Scotland with Ireland 13 seconds adrift.

Split times were: Jermy 1:06, Vides 1:11.1, Kurihara 1:01, Seller 57sec.

Vides, whose elder sister Naomi has also swum breaststroke for England in the WISE international, has seen his times tumble since last summer and is now fifth in the British rankings for 14-year-olds.

He attributes his recent improvement to work he has done on the underwater pullout which follows the start and each turn in breaststroke.

England were the overall winners.
