FLYING winger Sam Yarwood admitted he would love to reach the magic 30-try milestone in league action in National Three South West this season.

But after taking his tally to a Bournemouth club record 27 with a brace in their impressive 31-17 home win over Old Patesians, he wants promotion even more.

Yarwood, who scored two first-half touch downs to better Sam Hardcastle’s previous best of 25, said: “It would be great to get to 30 in our final two league games and in the play-off.

“I would rather the team go up, though, than me reach that figure.”

Before Lions pulled away in the second period to win convincingly, one-time promotion rivals Old Pates gave them a stiff test.

Victory secured second-placed Bournemouth a play-off spot, probably away to Barnes or Hertford from the London and South East region.

Yarwood, who also saw Dan Pollard, Callum Forrest and Chris Hughes score tries, with Pollard adding three conversions, said: “It’s all about building for the play-off now.

“That game means a lot to the whole team, particularly Alan Manning.

“We are scared to lose because he gets so upset, he takes it so hard.

“He has really grown as captain and has done a fantastic job this season.”

Looking back on his debut campaign for Bournemouth, Yarwood added: “I definitely didn’t think I would have broken the try scoring record when I joined the club last summer.

“This is the highest level of rugby I have played in England and I didn’t know what to expect, so I feel I have adapted well.

“It’s a great feeling, particularly as it is my first season at Chapel Gate.

“It’s been a great campaign all round for me and the team.”
