Poole Town boss Tom Killick has warned his FA Vase heroes to guard against complacency when they face quarter-final underdogs Torpoint Athletic.

Dolphins were yesterday handed a dream last eight draw at home to the South West Peninsula Premier League outfit – the lowest ranked team left in the competition.

However, Killick, whose side staged a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to edge out favourites Spennymoor 3-2 on Saturday, last night insisted his troops would have to improve to keep alive their dream of a Wembley final.

Killick told the Echo: “It’s a good draw for us but we must be careful not to be complacent. Against Spennymoor we were very aware about how tough it was going to be and playing the favourites, we had to be mentally focused.

“I don’t want people thinking that Torpoint will be an easy task because they have won a number of games to get to this stage, so they will be a decent side.

“But we have avoided Whitley Bay and Kings Lynn, which were the two I wanted to stay away from at this stage.”

Wessex League champions Dolphins found themselves on the brink of fifth round elimination against Northern League big-guns Spennymoor, before substitute Steve Smith bagged a quick-fire five-minute brace and Dan Cann lashed home the winner seconds from time.

Dolphins, meanwhile, have been drawn at home in every round of this year’s competition, seeing off Wellington AFC, Wantage Town, St Ives Town and Spennymoor on their way to the last eight.

Killick, who battled against a nasty cold in the Tatnam dug-out on Saturday, added: “It is fairly strange to have that good fortune in terms of the home ties and Torpoint will have to travel from Cornwall to come up here. I think the home advantage made a big difference on Saturday so, hopefully, it will be the same in the next round.

“I didn’t feel too well on Saturday and at 2-0 down I was ready to go home to my mum!

“But one thing we have to accept is that, on the day, Spennymoor were the better side. There was an element of fortune about the win and while I don’t want to play down what the players achieved, we will have to play better in the next round.”

FA Vase draw, quarter-finals: Poole Town v Torpoint Athletic, Coalville Town v Leiston, Kings Lynn Town v Rye United, Dunston UTS v Whitley Bay. Ties to be played on Saturday, March 5.
