SAM Yarwood insists his club record run of scoring 13 tries in 10 consecutive matches will pale in significance if Bournemouth secure promotion to National League Division Two.

Lions currently ride high in third place in National Three South West, just one point behind Old Patesians and only five adrift of leaders Hartpury.

So, if they complete a league double over Weston at Chapel Gate tomorrow (kick-off 2pm) they’ll be handily placed going into January to win a three-horse race for the title.

Yarwood, who joined Lions at the start of this season after leaving university in South Wales, said: “As a winger, it’s always nice to score tries.

“But my run would pale in significance if we got promoted.

“That’s why I wasn’t really disappointed I didn’t stretch my try-scoring record to 11 matches during our 46-8 league win at Barnstaple last weekend.

“I wasn’t gutted because it was such a great team performance.

“The run was quite nice but I was very pleased with my display at Barnstaple as well as the team’s.

“It was a difficult place to go. They had a crowd of about 600 but we just hammered them from the first minute to the 80th.

“I had a few line breaks and we ran a few good moves that worked well, but I wasn’t close to scoring.

“My run has never affected our play anyway. So it doesn’t lift the pressure now it’s over. It was just a big talking point. That’s four games in a row we’ve ended up with maximum points so we have to be happy with that.”

Looking ahead to Weston’s visit, Yarwood added: “We’re a much better team than when we produced a great fightback to beat them 29-21 away in September.

“We’d also beaten Barnstaple by one point at home before our away win last Saturday.

“It shows how much we’ve improved and I hope we can continue our great form with another five points.”

Yarwood echoes Lions chief David Dunn’s view that one of Hartpury, Old Patesians or Bournemouth will win the league. The winger added: “It would be fantastic to go up, a great achievement. Old Pates only beat Barnstaple 19-3 the other week and we’ve beaten Hartpury, so we can certainly do it. We might need a bit of good luck though.”

Frazer Wilford, Will Brooks and Anthony Dunkerley come back into contention for Lions tomorrow, but Iain Crombie (injured) and Jack Hennings (unavailable) are out.
