BROTHERS Alex and Simon Browne saw their hopes of a Dorset Senior Cup date bite the dust following defeat for their respective clubs in last night’s quarter-finals.

Alex Browne watched Wimborne Town surrender a half-time lead during their 2-1 reverse at the hands of Western League Division One high-fliers Bridport at Cuthbury.

And elder sibling Simon looked on from the sidelines as Hamworthy United were on the receiving end of a 4-0 beating from Southern League Premier outfit Weymouth at the County Ground.

Bridport made light of a two-level lower standing when they hit back to book their place in the last four thanks to second-half goals from Ryan Dovell and Darren Lock.

The Bees’ comeback ruined a memorable moment for Magpies’ teenage striker Tom Hunt who had netted his first senior goal to put the hosts in front.

Wimborne boss Alex Browne, who made a number of changes to his team, said: “We played pretty well in the first half but didn’t turn up for the second and Bridport were worthy winners.

“Sometimes when you play teams from beneath you in the pyramid, what they lack in quality, they make up for in effort. If you don’t match them, you are always going to come up short and we didn’t show enough work-rate in the second half.”

Hammers, meanwhile, failed to bridge a two-tier gulf and were sunk by a hat-trick from Terras’ Salisbury City loan striker Matthew Wright and a goal from County Ground old boy Warren Byerley.

Weymouth raced into a 3-0 lead inside the opening 27 minutes and, although Hammers recovered to give a presentable account of themselves, Wright wrapped things up midway through the second half.

Magpies: Walker-Harris, Yelland, Wilson, Roast, Lockyer, Smith, Green, Stokoe, James, Hunt (Chudy, 80), Groves (Barnes, 60). Unused subs: Curtis, Lloyd.
