THE Dorset masters team finished 11th out of 29 English counties in the ASA Inter-county masters competition, held in regional rounds across the country with the times from all 68 events going into a computer to produce a national result.

British masters record-holder Jean Howard-Jones, 67, was involved in all three of Dorset’s race wins, taking the individual 65/o 50m freestyle by 3.4 seconds in 34.42 and the butterfly in 43.49.

She was also second in the 50m breaststroke (47.72) and joined Linda Ashmore, Les Jessop and Peter Kirk to win the mixed 240yrs 4x50m freestyle by two seconds in 2:08.59.

Nick Vaughan, 46, who also holds British masters records, came second in the 45/o 50m freestyle (26.24) and butterfly (32.53).

Andy Small achieved third place in the 45/o 50m backstroke (31.09).

Fourth place went to the women’s 72yrs 4x50m freestyle team of Kirsty Heard, Elaine Lewis, Laura Bale and Sarah Meaker with Meaker also coming fifth in the 18/o 50m breaststroke (36.96) and eighth in the freestyle (28.29).
