Ferndown'S finest completed an elusive inter-club scratch double by winning the Brokenhurst Stag for the first time in their 27 year history on Sunday.

After reaching the final five years in a row, and losing out by one point on three occasions, they overcame North Hants 9.5 matches to 5.5 to clinch the title.

Their Stag success comes a week after winning the prestigious Beckford Bowl at Broadstone.

In the run up to the Stag final, Tom Leech and Andy Windsor hadn’t lost a game in six matches and continued that good form at Brokenhurst Manor. They won their foursomes 7 and 6 to cap a fine season.

There were also foursomes wins for Harry Mitchell/Sonny Wilkinson (4 and 3) and Mark Davies/Dean Barnes (1 up).

Defeats for Ferndown pairings Ben Harvey/Mark Balson and Matt Hector/Pete Jarvis left Fern-down with a slender 3-2 advantage after the morning session.

Hector, however, redeemed himself by recording the first singles win of the day. His 2 and 1 success including birdies at the 14th and 16th holes.

Windsor won his last amateur game before turning professional in October (4 and 1) and Barnes recorded five birdies in the last five holes to win his match (3 and 2) and leave Ferndown needing one point from three games.

And any worries of a late collapse were soon banished as Jarvis won his match 3 and 2 to hand Ferndown the trophy.
