DOMINANT Dorset secured their fifth national county finals appearance with a five-star performance at the South West Championships in Somerset.

The young team, which boasts current English champion Hayley Davis and national under-13 star Georgia Hall, won all five of their matches at Saltford Golf Club.

Key to their success was the foursomes – where they lost just once in 15 matches.

It is the fifth time Dorset have won the event and the second in the past three years.

With an average age of 18, Dorset played with a maturity beyond their years and stamped their authority on day one with a 7½ to 1½ win over Devon.

Double winners Davis and Hall were joined by Kerry-Anne Haskell and Hannah Bews, who also won both their matches.

Davis, Hall and Haskell notched up another maximum return in a commanding 8-1 win over Cornwall in the second match.

Dorset strengthened their grip on the trophy with a 6½ to 2½ success over Wiltshire on day three as Davis maintained her perfect record in the foursomes and singles.

A 6-3 triumph over defending champions and tournament favourites Gloucestershire in the penultimate match left Dorset needing at least a draw against the hosts.

And the youngsters pulled out all the stops with a commanding 7½ to 1½ victory over Somerset.

International stars Davis and Hall completed the week with maximum points.

Non-playing captain Liz Lloyd (Parkstone) said: “I knew we could win. We had an excellent coach (Martin Cummins), excellent players, but most importantly we had excellent team spirit.

“Every player supported each other and this was highlighted in the foursomes. Winning four out of five mornings gave us a lot of confidence going into the afternoon rounds.”

Dorset join Lincolnshire and Sussex in the English Counties Championship at Kedleston Park, Derbyshire in September.
