NEWLY promoted Wimborne Town were last night set to open talks with two potential signings as they build for life in the Southern League.

Assistant manager Darren Powell also revealed that discussions had already been held with one player, with the club looking to add a few new faces ahead of the step four campaign.

Magpies finished second to champions Poole Town in last season’s Wessex Premier Division, but were handed a place in the Southern League because of Dolphins’ ground-grading difficulties.

And they are bidding to challenge at the higher level – with plans in place to bolster the Cuthbury playing resources.

Powell, boss Alex Browne’s number two, told the Echo: “We’re looking at two or three at the moment.

“We’re going to have a few in for trials during pre-season, so something might also come up during that.

“We’ve spoken to one player and talked to two more last night. If we get all three then great, if not we’ll explore other avenues.”

Powell confirmed that Wimborne’s promotion-winning squad were set to get their opportunity next term.

He added: “They have all agreed deals and we are keeping all of them.

“They have done well to get us into the position we’re in, so they deserve to have a crack at it.”

Meanwhile, manager Browne has insisted he will leave “no stone unturned” in his preparations for the season.

“I’m currently working on a pre-season schedule,” he told the club’s official website.

“We will be working on our organisation and doing some sharpness and agility work.

“The aim is get ourselves fit for the first game and make ourselves competitive.”

He added: “We can expect to be able to spend more time on the ball at the higher level, which should make the games more attractive, although we did play some good football in the Wessex League last season.”
