AWARD-winner Brett Pitman is relishing the challenge that awaits Cherries in League One after insisting he remains unaffected by transfer speculation.

The prolific frontman, who will today receive the Daily Echo/Micky Cave supporters’ player-of-the-season trophy after landing the prestigious prize, has hit the headlines by netting 27 times to fire Cherries to promotion.

His exceptional record and penchant for spectacular goals this term have led to rumours linking clubs such as Peterborough United, Blackpool and, most recently, Reading with the gifted striker.

But Pitman has continued to go about his business impressively and he is not letting that talk distract him from his Cherries task. When asked if he thinks about the speculation, the talented 22-year-old said: “No, not really.

“I’ve always said I can’t affect what’s going on off the pitch. By doing well on the pitch, if people start writing about me, it means I’m doing something right, so it’s nice to read.

“But it doesn’t affect me because a lot of it is just made-up speculation, I’d imagine.”

And when asked if he is hoping to be at Dean Court when the new campaign gets under way, he said: “Yeah, I’m happy to stay here, I’ve always said that. If anything else happens, it’s out of my hands.”

That will come as welcome news for Cherries fans, who showed their appreciation for Pitman’s exploits by naming him the Daily Echo/Micky Cave trophy winner for 2009-10.

Supporters voiced their opinions in record numbers – with more than 1,100 votes received by the Echo – and top scorer Pitman will collect the well-deserved gong ahead of the League Two clash against Port Vale at Dean Court (3pm).

But modest Pitman said: “Everyone has done well and it’s been a real team effort. I don’t think there have been any individuals who have carried us through.

“We’ll all have a nice summer and then come back and work hard like we did in the last pre-season.

“We’ll see where that takes us in League One – it’s not going to be easy but we’ll enjoy it.

“Everyone wants to play against big teams, big clubs and better players. Next season, we’ve got a chance to do that and it will be a test for everyone, and one I’m sure we’re capable of meeting.”
