LOCAL lad Dan Thomas is keen to grasp his Cherries chance as he bids to stake a claim for a professional contract.

The rookie keeper has been placed under the spotlight in recent weeks following a double injury setback for first-choice Shwan Jalal.

Thomas, 18, was called upon to face Notts County in the FA Cup after Jalal twisted his left ankle in training. And having recovered from that, Jalal then suffered a calf injury against Shrewsbury on Saturday, with Thomas required to come off the bench for the final half-hour.

The former Portchester School pupil, who played his youth football for Redhill Rangers, could now get a further opportunity to display his credentials, with Jalal’s fitness in doubt ahead of Saturday’s trip to Morecambe.

Asked how he felt when he filled in against Shrewsbury, Thomas told the Echo: “I was surprised when Jal went down because he wasn’t struggling. But I got myself ready and then I was ready to go on.

“I felt quite relaxed – more relaxed than I was the week before. I think now I’ve played a couple of games I’m more relaxed about things.

“I see it as an opportunity for myself.”

Thomas, who made his senior debut in October’s JPT defeat at Northampton Town, has been working under the coaching guidance of Neil Moss.

“I’ve improved a lot since the start of the season,” said Thomas.

“Mossy helps me a lot and Jal always has input and helps me out.”

Asked about his future goals, Thomas added: “To get a professional contract.”
