GARETH Barnes has completed his dream move back to Wimborne Town – but he must wait for the chance to pull on a Magpies jersey again.

Barnes officially left Christchurch on Tuesday after admitting that the opportunity of a fourth spell at Wimborne was just too good to turn down.

But the experienced forward faces a frustrating delay in his bid to help Alex Browne’s men to Wessex League glory, as he requires surgery on a hernia injury.

“I’ve got a minor hernia and I’ve got to see the surgeon next month,” said the 31-year-old, who boasts an impressive record of 151 goals in 251 appearances for his new club.

“Then I hope to get booked in for an operation. It’s only a two-week rest period and then I’ll be back.”

Once he does return to full fitness, Barnes has his eyes on one prize – the Wessex League championship.

He was part of the Wimborne side which won the double in 1999-2000 and would like to celebrate the 10th anniversary in style.

“They are in a good league position at the minute and, if I can help in any way to win the league again, it would be fitting 10 years on,” he said.

“But I will have to work hard to get in the side because the two lads up front are banging in the goals.”

Barnes added: “It’s an absolute delight to go back to Wimborne.

“I never thought I’d get the chance to play for them again.

“I’m 31 now and the chance has come up, so it will be an absolute pleasure to go and play for them.

“I’ve always played my best football at Wimborne and I love the club very much.”

The striker rejoins Wimborne from Christchurch and he takes fond memories from his time at Hurn Bridge.

“I played for Christchurch about 14 years ago and went back at the beginning of last season,” said Barnes.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time there – they have a great chairman and a brilliant manager.

“I’ve not one bad word about the set-up there and I’ve left on good terms.”

Wimborne’s bid to catch reigning Premier Division champions Poole Town continues tomorrow when they host Romsey (3pm).

James Wilson is suspended, Kev James returns after getting married and Nathan Walker is doubtful.
