NEW Hamworthy United boss Simon Browne is willing to don his boots if required – but he is hoping his players can do the job without him.

Poole Town captain Browne, who led Dolphins to a Wessex League and Dorset Senior Cup double last season, made the switch to Hamworthy when he was officially named as Phil Simkin’s successor on Thursday night.

He met the club’s squad following training on Thursday and is hopeful that the personnel at his disposal should be able to haul the side off the foot of the Wessex Premier table.

“I met the players on Thursday night for the first time and told them that, in my opinion, they are better than bottom and we’ll try to turn things around,” he said.

“I certainly haven’t set any targets or ambitions. I want to have a look at the players and watch a few games before deciding whether I need to play or need to change personnel.”

Asked if he intended to continue playing alongside his new managerial role, the 38-year-old added: “I’ve played a bit this season and I’d like to continue playing. But I said on Thursday night if they are doing the job and we’re doing well there’s no reason for me to stick myself in.

“I still feel I can do a job if needs be. I’ll look at it on a game to game basis.”

The former Weymouth, Dorchester and Salisbury City left-back will, at least in the transitional period, be assisted by Sean Bartlett, who was in caretaker charge of the team.

Simkin departed the County Ground last month after his successful spell as Hammers boss turned sour this term.
