Highcliffe-based angler Adrian Sparks reeled in a specimen sole when fishing from the shore at Barton.

The 38-year-old engineer’s success came when he was fishing around the 70-yard mark during a night session.

The sole took a large ragworm bait presented on a size 2 Aberdeen hook fished and it sets a new personal best Sparks also took two other small sole during the session along with the usual pouting.

MEEKS' RAY REWARD - SMALL boat anglers have also been finding the fish with Jason Meeks from Christchurch heaving a 14-12 undulate ray over the gunnels of his own boat Silver Blade while heading afloat from Mudeford.

Meeks used a large fresh mackerel bait presented on a 4/0 pennel rig fished on a long flowing trace to tempt the specimen.

DARREN TOPS TABLE - THE Warren Edge section at Southbourne was the setting for the ninth round of the Isac pegged open Premier League where 62 of the 75 competitors returned fish to the scales with the overall winner recording a nice bass.

Species caught during the event included two black bream, one bass, 13 dabs, eight garfish, 36 tub gurnards, 20 pout, 16 scad, 21 sole and 115 undersize fish which were all awarded one ounce each and returned alive.

Darren Newland now heads the overall leader table with 51 penalty points followed by John Brown (53), Rob Marshall and Ian Dancey (54), Dave Padmore (50), Ally Harvey (71) and then Steve Harder, Ant Buik and Nigel Thorn all with 73 points.

Newland, who won the open event, included a 3-12 bass in his catch which was the night’s heaviest fish. He collected £130 for his efforts. He also shared a further £200 when he teamed up Damian Geldard to win the Angling Trust affiliated pairs fixture which was fished in conjunction with the open event. The pair finished with a combined total of 6-7.

The next round in the pegged open series, which doubles as a Penn points fixture, will be held at Shoreham on October 17 with fishing from 7pm to midnight. Tickets have been set at £15 inclusive of pools. Full details and pre-book facilities can be obtained from Trevor Sutch on 07786 962540.

KING EDWARDS - A GOOD variety of species were recorded during the Rovers Tackle pegged catch-and-release midweek open shore competition held along the Pyramids section.

Dave Edwards won the total length section with 140cm followed by Andy Baulf 120cm and Darren Phillips 101cm. The longest fish section was won by Steve Carter with a 35cm silver eel followed by Andy Baulf with a 31cm tub gurnard and Mick Amos with a 29cm dogfish.

Lee-on-Solent is the setting for the next Rovers midweek pegged catch and release open shore competition on October 15 with fishing from 8pm to 11.30pm.

Tickets inclusive of pools have been set at £7. There will be three cash prizes in both the longest fish and total length section. BRAD’S PRIZE BASS THE latest round of the Angling Trust Wessex Region junior fish-of-the-month award was won by 13-year-old Brad Smith of the Lymington Club with a 5-0 bass caught at Highcliffe.

Joe Chamberlain, another 13-year-old also from Lymington, was runner-up with a 2-5 bass.

IT’S A SHORE THING - A £200 top prize is on offer when the Lymington Club stage their annual Shingle Bank Open shore event on October 31 with fishing from 7pm to midnight.

The venue will run from Taddiford to the first groyne at Hurst Castle.

Registration will get underway at the Needles Eye cafe from 5pm. Senior tickets have been set at £10 plus pools. Junior tickets will cost just £3. The match doubles as a Penn Points fixture.
