DORSET staked a share of third place in the English Seniors County Finals with a 4½-4½ draw against Staffordshire on the final day at Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey.

Singles victories for Chris Dennis, Brian Medlam and David Lock helped overturn a 2-1 deficit from the morning foursomes.

Staffordshire, however, drew level when Neil Copestick beat Rob Clapp on the final green, while Dorset’s David Backhouse was pegged back in the last game after dropping a shot on the 18th hole to draw his game.

The South West champions began the tournament by losing all three foursomes matches against Kent. Dorset lost 6-3, despite leading in five of the singles.

Highlight of the match was John Smith’s two-hole victory over English Seniors champion Chris Reynolds.

Clapp was Dorset’s only point-winner in the 8-1 defeat to Cheshire on the second day.

Kent regained the title with a 5½-3½ win against Cheshire on the final day.
