POOLE Pirates co-promoter Matt Ford was pleased with this work out despite the result in this Coastal Windows Cup first leg at Foxhall Stadium tonight.

Standing in as team manager for Neil Middleditch who has dental problems, Ford saw his team well beaten by a virtually full-strength Ipswich team.

He included three young foreign riders in his side and with Bjarne Pedersen missing as he has just become a dad and 2010 Grand Prix qualifier Chris Holder given permission to take a rest, the visitors were always likely to be there for the taking as speedway returned to the Foxhall for the first time in five weeks.

Artur Mroczka was the most impressive of the newcomers with the 19-year-old Pole winning heat eight and then beating home skipper Daniel King into last place in the final heat when the Pirates collected only their second heat advantage of the night - the first being when Steve Boxall rode for double points in heat eight and came third.

Pole Dawid Lampart, 19, crashed in his first two rides and failed to score while Czech Matej Kus, 20, beat Frenchman Matieu Tresarrieu in heat 10 but otherwise failed to beat an opponent.

Ford said: "Dawid looked great in his first two laps, but in Britain you have to ride with your head as well as your throttle.

"I felt sorry for him as he blew an engine and it was an expensive night. Matej is going to be a good rider but did not find it easy on his first rides at Ipswich looking off the pace to the first corner.

"Artur was excellent value taking time to find his feet in his first race and then impressing me with the way he rode.

"This is just what these end of season meetings are all about."

Magnus Zetterstrom, who won the GP qualifying final at Coventry last month, took no time to settle winning heat four and beating King and Troy Batchelor in heat nine.

Robert Miskowiak had home fans on their feet in heat 11 when he re-took Hans Andersen on the second lap to hold on and beat the Dane who was riding for double points.

Former Witch Andersen gained his revenge on Miskowiak in race 13 when he also beat Nicholls to stop the home number one's hopes of completing a maximum.

The second leg takes place at Wimborne Road next Wednesday.
