STAND-IN skipper Liam Green led Wimborne to another famous league victory over their fierce Dorset rivals before admitting Poole were still the team to beat for the title.

The Magpies put the cat among the pigeons by chalking up a 3-0 win over the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division table-topping Dolphins in front of a 578-strong crowd at Tatnam on Tuesday.

Early and late goals from Tom Clarke sandwiched a Scott Joyce effort as Wimborne ended Poole’s unbeaten league start for the second season running.

Green, deputising for the injured Paul Roast, told the Daily Echo: “Poole are a great side and we’ve got huge respect for them. What they did last season was unbelievable.

“They are a difficult side to play and I’m sure they will recover from this very quickly “I know they’ve lost Charlie Austin but they’ve still got some great players. In Pete Smith, they’ve got the best player in this league by a country mile.

“When I was at Winchester City, I didn’t think any team would better our record but they did it emphatically last season. They are definitely still the team to beat and we’re just trying to stay with them.”

Green added: “In terms of possession, they had the better of the game.

“But in terms of chances, we looked dangerous every time we went forward.

“Our front two, Scott Joyce and Tom Clarke, have been terrific lately. They have been working hard as well as showing their class.

“We’ve got a really good team spirit and the group has been together for quite a while. Everyone is enjoying playing together and it is showing in our performances.

“When the going got tough at the start of last season, we didn’t stick together but we do now. We’re also more difficult to beat, our back four has seen to that.

“It’s one defeat for Poole and they’ve got a great squad with great strength in depth. We’re just happy to be a bit more resilient under Alex Browne and have learned how to win ugly.”

Clarke opened the scoring in the first minute from the penalty spot after Joyce had been tripped by Lamin Dibba, who was later sent off for a second bookable offence.

Joyce then rounded former Magpies goalkeeper Dan Ackerman to double Wimborne’s lead in the 34th minute before the visitors were also reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of James Wilson for two bookings midway through the second half. However, Clarke sealed the points with his second and Wimborne’s third in added time.
