CENTENARY club Parkstone have celebrated their 100-year anniversary by reaching the final of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Classic Knockout competition in Spain.

The men’s team of five players overcame Ely of Cambridge 3-2 in the National Finals at Worsley Park in Manchester.

Man-of-the-match Dean Chandler provided the first point, leading from the front, before the Dorset side lost two on the bounce.

Captain Paul ‘Woody’ Harding lost on the last despite being three up with five to play, and Dean Mellor also lost out on the 18th green.

It was left to brothers Nick and Tim Hill to save the match.

Nick duly levelled the scores with a 2 and 1 success, while sibling Tim overcame a plus-two handicapper 3 and 2.

They now progress to the Grand Final at Golf El Rompido in Spain on November 25-29. The other three teams to book their place were Moor Park, Stoneleigh and Whitburn.

County champion David Cook, meanwhile, added the Parkstone club championship to his impressive array of silverware by beating fellow Dorset player David Talbot 5 and 4 in a low-scoring 36-hole contest.

Cook took an early lead with a birdie at the sixth, before Talbot overturned the deficit to lead for the only time of the match by winning the next two holes.

Talbot pegged his opponent back on several occasions before losing the 18th to go one down at the interval.

Despite winning the first hole after lunch, Talbot lost the momentum with two bogeys while Cook added a birdie to go three up after 27 holes.

A win at the 10th gave Talbot the belief he could still salvage the match, but Cook had other ideas as he birdied three of the next four holes to seal victory.
