BATTLING Lee Thompson dem-onstrated his powers of recovery with a top-10 finish in last week’s Cornish PGA Festival, sponsored by Waverley TBS, at Perranporth, St Enodoc and Newquay.

He played his opening round at Newquay, by far the easiest course of the week. Yet he shot seven-over-par 76. It was one of the highest rounds at the course during the week and was a source of embarrassment.

But, encouraged by playing partners Colin and Giles Legg (Ferndown) and Colin Short (Parkstone) he leapfrogged his way through the field.

He carded a remarkable two-under-par 70 at Perranporth on a day where all players were drenched by the rain. It was easily the round of the day.

It moved him to 23rd before a final three-under-par 66 at St Enodoc, the toughest of the courses, brought a share of eighth and a cheque for £525.

He said: “After that horrendous opening round I simply had to concentrate and do my best. I was very happy with the way I played after that – especially as I do not play very often these days.”
