PAUL Hurry has revealed he actually had to duck under Ulrich Ostergaard’s handlebars to get past him on the way to a vital 5-1 in Pirates’ win over Belle Vue.

Poole Castle Cover’s reserve, nearing the end of a 28-day spell with the club, had next to no room to play with outside by the boards on the back straight.

But he still forced his way past Ostergaard and Morten Risager on the opening lap, then passed Risager again later in the race, as his 5-1 with Joe Screen helped spur the Dorset outfit to a 46-44 home win on Monday.

Reliving his unusual move and heat 12 heroics, Hurry said: “I had to duck under Ulrich’s handlebars because there was no other way to get past him as we were so close to the fence.

“I just had to do it, I had to get myself past because it had all gone belly-up after I’d run three lasts, and I don’t accept that.”

Hurry, still chasing an extension to his initial short-term contract ahead of Pirates’ trip to Swindon tomorrow, added: “I know on my equipment I’m not up to standard.

“I’ve had four Poole home meetings and not ridden the same bike.

“On Monday, I rode an Andreas Jonsson bike from 2006 that Neville Tatum supplied.

“It wasn’t set up for me. The seat was too high and the handlebars were different, so I’m running before I can walk.

“But it’s been great riding for Poole. It’s been hard coming back after 18 months off and the team not winning a meeting until Monday.

“That’s why it was so great for me and the team that we did.”

Hurry, who has suffered no adverse reaction from a broken arm, added: “As long as I can get my equipment sorted out, and I know I’m in the Elite, I’ll get a loan and buy two new bikes.

“I already have a new engine on order, but I would get the complete bikes.

“Wessex Marine have helped me with a bike I’ve used as back-up, but if I know what I’m doing, I can invest in equipment.

“Until I know, it’s hard. It’s like you don’t know whether you’re working.

“I don’t want to go anywhere else (other than Poole), but I might not have the choice.”

Hurry felt referee Chris Durno wrongly excluded him from heat 14 after he’d been on a 5-1 with Daniel Davidsson on the third lap.

He said: “His (Billy Forsberg’s) tyre caught me.

“What the refs forget is the dirt deflector is behind your tyre, and the hit picked me up.

“The back of his bike just caught my footrest and I feel he should have been excluded, not me.”
