‘ROLLS’ Rhoys Wiggins is desperate to help Cherries put their safety bid into overdrive after agreeing to lend his support to the remainder of their relegation scrap.

Wiggins, who has been given the quirky nickname by team-mate Lee Bradbury, this week extended his loan spell from Crystal Palace until the end of the season.

“I’ve heard a lot worse!” joked Wiggins. “In 21 years, I’ve never been called Rolls and it’s probably the easiest nickname to come up with so I suppose it will stick.”

Wiggins has turned in four impressive displays at left-back since joining Cherries to cover for injured Warren Cummings midway through last month.

And with Cummings now back in training, the Welsh under-21 international is preparing himself for a fierce battle to keep the shirt.

Wiggins said: “The manager told me that there would be good competition before I signed. I know Warren is a good player and I’ve seen that for myself in training.

“I’m used to competition at Palace and it brings out the best in you. Hopefully, I can do well and keep my place.

“I’ve certainly enjoyed my first few games here. We’ve played well and I think we have deserved more from them. We could have had four wins from four.

“Overall, we have looked strong and organised as a team. In a way, it’s good for me to be involved in the situation we’re in because it’s going to give me good experience.

“I want to play my part and help us come through. It would be a great feeling, not just for me but for the team as well.”

Cherries boss Eddie Howe had to fight hard to keep Wiggins, with several other clubs keen to secure his services ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Out of contract at Selhurst Park in the summer, Wiggins says he will keep his future options open as he sees out the rest of this season at Dean Court.

“If I do well here, I may get another contract at Palace,” he said.

“I’ll just have to see how things go.”

Wiggins is expected to keep his place as Cherries put their three-match unbeaten run on the line against League Two promotion chasers Shrewsbury Town at Dean Court tomorrow (3pm).
